Pi(e) Day 2009

It's Pi(e) Day!!!!! So I've sworn off most of the conventional food holidays.... Christmas.... Valentines day.... I like Thanksgiving and 4th of July is OK but probably my biggest food holiday is Pi(e) day. There's none of the commercials, none of the crap (aka gift) giving, none of crowds or anything like that.

If you read my blog last year (or if you click the link that follows), you'll remember the 12 pies I made and the event it became at work. Now I am working somewhere new, where people don't know me very well and... it's just different. I wasn't ready for it to become a spectacle like before.

Really, things were really busy the week or so before Pi(e) day and suddenly it's 3AM on Wednesday night when I realized it was almost Pi(e) Day. Since I've already told everyone what crappy holidays the ones I said above are, I figured I need to show them what a good holiday is.

I made a total of 5 pies this year. They went in on Friday so that I could put them out with my Pi(e) Day signs. So that people would understand.

Frozen Lemonade Pie
Corn and Bacon Pie x2
Pumpkin Pie x2

Here's a pic of the 2 pumpkin pies that I was packing to bring to work. How cool is that container by the way. The 2 pies fit perfectly so they don't slide around and get beat up. And it's got a carrying handle. There is a lid on the end that I have off in this pic but it fits well.

Last year I started planning it out several weeks in advance, baked a few every day starting about a week before, did quasi mise en place because who has time to bake multiple pies etc every night for a week. Let's just say it's a good thing I've got a much more user friendly kitchen now. There is no way I could do all this at my old apartment. That and I chose relatively easy recipes this year.

If you are reading this and you have no Pi(e) Day plans make them!! Make a pie! I have lots of recipes for them, here and here and here and here. Or Google if you don't like mine. Or go out and eat a pie. 3.14159265358979 pies. mmmmmm I like pie.

Still TBD what I will do today....
